9033 Chapter 33 of: “Twinergy and the Boys of Clear Lake!”

Marsha: “There’s been a terrible accident sweetheart.”

Tasha: “Where?”

Marsha: “Down on the edge of town by the dam and river.”

Tasha: “You mean on highway 89 by the bridge?”

Marsha: “Yes Tash, Im sorry. This isn’t easy.”

Tasha: “How bad?” As she sat backwards real hard into the couch.

Marsha: “I’m not sure of the details. Only that it was Nika and Sequoia.”

Tasha: “I asked how bad Marsha!”

Marsha: “I’m so sorry sweetheart, but one of them is dead. And the other is in a coma with a skull fracture. He’s undergoing emergency surgery right now.”

Tasha: “Which one is it. Who’s dead Marsha?”

Marsha: “Why don’t we let your parents talk to you when we get down there.”

With a very stern voice, “I Said Who Is It Marsha?”

Marsha: “I’m not sure Tash. Your father spoke to Jordan and he wasn’t clear about much of what happened.”

Tasha: “Oh God how I’m going to miss either of them. Whomever it was, I just pray he felt no pain.”

Marsha and Tash made their way out to the SUV as Tash got in and was immediately grabbed and hugged by her best friend….Abby. They both began to cry as Cody slept and Sasha laid on the seat curled up with his eyes open, but nobody home. He still had his thumb in his mouth sucking away on it just like the last time he did that, when he was three years old.

They pulled out of the driveway and onto the highway. Then they turned off on a dirt road bypassing the road block a few miles down by the dam at the scene of the accident. Then headed north as they snaked their way up Mount Rose highway to the top and then started down the other side towards Reno. Meanwhile, we pick things up at Childrens Hospital in Reno Nevada, where all sorts of hell was breaking loose.

“Thank God you’re here Dr. Hart. We sure can use your help here this morning. We’ve been swamped. Since about 2:00am.”

Dr. Hart: “You guys better be swamped Semoni. You don’t call in the Hospitals Chief of Staff this early in the morning on his day off unless it’s an emergency. Now tell me why it looks like a war zone in here, and what the hells going on?”

Dr. Semoni: “Yes sir, we took a big hit about midnight when a rock slide hit a group of sleeping Boy Scouts who were camping up near Kirkwood. Then an hour or two later, a couple of near drowning victims, female ages seven and eight were brought in from the Truckee River. We were already at capacity at that point, but then we had several children brought in from the apartment fire over in Sparks. One was treated and now is up in Intensive care, and the other is still in the ER. Now we have a couple kids involved in that semi-truck accident up in Clear Lake.”

Dr. Hart: “I heard about that on the radio on the way in. It was over on 89 not far from where the girls fell in the river and almost drowned. They had the highway closed trying to sort it all out. “

Dr. Semoni: “That would be the one sir.”

Dr. Hart: “And what’s their status Dr. Semoni?”

Dr. Semoni: “One was pronounced dead at the scene and the other just went into the ER, but it doesn’t look good. The Medevac had just brought him in before you arrived sir.”

Dr. Hart: “What’s his age and status.”

Dr. Semoni: “It appears he’s between eleven and thirteen, and he has a fractured skull. He’s been comatose since before he arrived. Here’s his chart”

Dr. Hart: “Where’s he at and who’s in there with him?”

Dr. Semoni: “He’s in ER #3 as 1 and 2 have Boy Scouts that are being stabilized right now, and #4 has one of the fire victims. Dr. Ruck and Dr. Sloan are in with him in #3.”

The Head Nurse: “Dr. Hart, Dr. Semoni, they just radioed in. Another Medevac Chopper is landing on the roof as we speak.”

Dr. Semoni: “Holy Shit, what now?”

Nurse: “It’s the boy from the orphanage who was on the backpacking trip up in the Desolation Wilderness.”

Dr. Semoni: “You mean the snakebite kid?”

Nurse: “Yes, he was bit on the neck by a Western Diamondback (Rattle Snake), while looking under a rock with his friends. But its taken 8 hours to carry him out because they couldn’t get a chopper in there.”

Dr. Hart: “Tell me we did think ahead to have the anti venom on hand?”

Nurse: “Yes sir, it was airlifted to the pick-up spot . They started the anti venom in the Medevac transport at the base camp where they picked him up.”

Dr. Hart: “Is he responding?”

Nurse: “I don’t know sir, the Dr. from Southern General up in Clear Lake is flying in on the chopper with him. They should be down in the elevator any minute.”

Dr. Hart: “Ok, I’m issuing a directive. Notify Reno General and Sparks County Hospitals that we are at capacity and for any other emergencies to be diverted to them. We can’t handle anything else right now.”

Dr. Semoni and the nurse: “Yes sir.”

Dr. Hart: “And Dr. Semoni?”

Dr. Semoni: “Yes sir?”

Dr. Hart: “This kid with the fractured skull, whats his outlook?”

Dr. Semoni: “Not very good sir. He’s lost a lot of blood and there’s a lot of swelling.”

Dr. Hart: “His chart here says Nikita Nicoli Von Heflin?”

Dr. Semoni: “Yes sir, does that mean anything to you?”

Dr. Hart: “Yes, it may. I believe I know this kid. He’s my architect Niklas Von Heflins son. Page Dr. Hudson, the Chief Neurosurgeon at Reno General for me and get him on the line. I want him over here pronto.”

Dr. Semoni: “Yes sir, will do.”

Just then the elevator doors flew open and a gurney with a Dr. and a team of nurses came rushing out and towards the last ER. The Dr. holding the IV said “Lets clear a path people. We have a very sick kid here.”

Dr. Hart: “Is this the snake bite?”

Dr. Villa (from Southern General in South Clear Lake): “Yes it is, who’s taking him and where’s he going?”

Dr. Hart: I am, Dr. Hart, chief of staff. Wheel him into #5.”

Dr. Villa: “Hello Dr. I’m Dr. Villa from Southern General up in Clear Lake. I flew down on the Medevac with him.”

Dr. Hart: “How’s he responding to the anti venom?”

Dr. Villa: “Not to well I’m afraid, I believe it may have just been too long.”

Dr. Hart: “He looks to be seven or eight.”

Dr. Villa: “Eight I think. He’s from the Indian Orphanage up in South Lake.”

Dr. Hart: “SHIT, flatline, he’s crashing, get him into ER 5 and set up a crash cart for me!”

Dr Semoni: “I have Dr. Hudson, Chief or Neurosurgery at Reno General for you Dr. Hart.”

Dr. Hart: “Not Now Semoni! This kid’s crashing! Just fax him the Von Heflin kids chart and tell him Ronald said to get over here right away. He owes me a few and it’s payback time.”

Dr. Semoni: “Yes sir, I’ll see to it we chopper him in here in 10 minutes.”

Dr. Hart: “And tell Dr. Ruck and Dr. Sloan that the Calvarys on the way! I’ll be tending to our little snake bite victim. And I mean it when I say were at capacity Semoni. So make sure you divert all other emergencies to Sparks and Reno General.”

Dr. Semoni: “Yes sir.”

Nurse to Dr. Semoni: “Last time it was this busy in here was the fire we had in Clear Lake a couple years ago.”

Dr. Semoni: “Yes, or maybe the avalanche at the ski resort?”

With the turn of events at the hospital, everyone scrambled around like ants or worker bee’s with clear objectives in their mind. Meanwhile an SUV with three parents pulled up to the emergency room and jumped out and ran inside leaving the vehicle parked right where it was with the doors wide open. A security guard yelled out, “Hey buddy, you can’t leave this parked there!”

Mr. Von Heflin fired back, “my boy just came in here in a coma and I have to get to him.”

The guard yelled “it’s a tow away zone” to no avail as the three parents were already inside the hospital doors. Then the guard got on his walkie-talkie and said “we have another one” in an east coast accent, and “get me the tow company.”

Just then another younger guard walked by him and said “Don’t be such a fuckin prick all the time,” as he hopped in the drives seat, started up the SUV and parked it in the employees parking lot for the worried parents.

The parents ran up to the information desk and asked about Nikita. The clerk at the desk asked their relation and they explained they were his parents. She told them he was in the ER and that she knew nothing yet on his current condition. And that they can sit in the waiting room, because it was going to be a while before they knew anything. The parents agreed as Mr. V said “Golden Fawn (who was still sobbing), when Jordan and Marsha get here, we can arrange to take you back to the house.”

Golden Fawn: “Thank you Niklas, but I’d rather stay here with you and the family. It’s important for me to know what becomes of Nika. I love him and he did try to save my son, so I owe him that.”

He gave her a long, heartfelt hug as he was tearing up at her sentimentality as his wife Nadia was as well.

Long about that time the desk clerk answered a phone as Dr. Semoni was walking by. She quickly snapped her fingers at him as she was speaking, catching his attention. He stopped in his tracks as she was hanging up the phone.

Dr. Semoni: “What is it Maggie?”

Maggie: “It’s Medevac 3, they just dropped a Neurosurgeon named Hudson up on the roof for the Von Heflin kid.”

Just then Mr. and Mrs. V looked up as a bolt of electricity shot through them after hearing their sons name.

Dr. Semoni: “That’s great Maggie, Dr. Hart called him in from Reno General, he’s their Chief Neurosurgeon. Get him scrubbed up and into ER# 3 as soon as he gets down here.”

Maggie: “Yes sir.”

Mr. V: “Dr., Dr., please wait a moment.”

Dr. Semoni: “Yes, what is it?”

Mr. V: “I’m Niklas Von Heflin (Mr. V), and this is my wife Nadia. I just heard you say something about a Dr. Hart called in another Dr. for the Von Heflin Kid? That’s our son Nikita.”

Dr. Semoni: “Oh, yes. I’m Dr. Semoni. He was just choppered in on a Medevac.”
